The Brief
The client required a raised timber decking installation to create a more practical and attractive outdoor living space at the rear of their property in Shenley Brook End, Milton Keynes. The existing garden had different levels, mature planting, and established borders, but the main outdoor area was not being used to its full potential.
The aim was to create a large, level timber decking area that could be used for seating, outdoor dining, and barbecuing, while still working naturally with the surrounding garden. The client wanted the finished space to feel connected to the house and conservatory, with improved access between the garden doors, side entrance, and planting areas.

The Challenge
The main challenge was working with the changes in level across the rear garden. A raised decking installation requires a strong, accurately constructed framework, especially when it is built across uneven ground and connected to several access points around the property.
The existing garden had mature shrubs, trees, and planting areas that the client wanted to retain. This meant the new timber decking had to be carefully planned around the garden’s existing character, rather than removing everything and starting again.
Privacy was also an important consideration. The garden was overlooked by neighbouring properties, so the new timber fencing and pergola-style structure needed to help define the space and improve privacy without making the garden feel enclosed.

Our Approach
We began by preparing the garden area and setting out the new raised decking layout. This allowed us to create a large, level seating area while working carefully around the existing planting, house access points, and garden boundaries.
A strong timber sub-frame was constructed to support the raised deck. The timber decking boards were then installed across the main area to create a clean and practical outdoor surface. Careful attention was given to the board lines, edges, and levels to ensure the finished decking looked neat and consistent from every angle.
Timber sleeper retaining walls were installed around the decking to manage the changes in level and form raised planting areas. This helped frame the deck while allowing the existing planting to remain an integral part of the overall garden design.
Integrated timber steps were built into the layout to provide safe and easy access between the house, conservatory, side entrance, and garden. The steps were designed to complement the decking and sleeper retaining walls, ensuring the whole project had a consistent timber finish.
New timber boundary fencing was installed to improve privacy and create a more defined garden space. A pergola-style timber frame was also added, giving the decking area greater structure and helping to create a comfortable outdoor seating area.
Once the installation was complete, the site was cleared, all waste was removed, and the garden was left clean and tidy.
